Celebrating the life of

Dr. Joseph T. Stubbs, Jr.

Passed away on September 19, 2023

Dr. Joseph T. Stubbs, Jr.

Joseph T. Stubbs, Jr died peacefully Tuesday September 19, 2023.
Joe was born to Mr. Joseph Truman and Mrs. Eva Lois Stubbs in Savannah, GA July 9, 1934. He grew up in Lanier, GA and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology. While working in Greensboro, NC as an industrial engineer he became smitten with a young college co-ed. After following her home from church, he introduced himself and soon fell in love with Miss Consolidated University [UNC, UNC-WC, NC State, Duke] Ann Joyce Fitzhugh. Joe and Ann were married in 1957 and honeymooned in Colonial Williamsburg – which forever held a special place in their hearts. Soon thereafter Joe decided to pursue a career in medicine; so, Joe and Ann moved back home to Lanier, GA where Joe could take classes at GA Southern, and Ann taught school at Black Creek Elementary. Joe graduated from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Virginia.  Joe and Ann moved to Savannah in 1967 to raise their family and open Joe’s ophthalmology practice.

Starting off, things were slow, and Joe had to ask his mother to quit sitting in his waiting room regaling patients how wonderful her son was. Quickly Joe became very busy and remained a solo practitioner for over 40 years until he joined GA Eye for the last few years of practice. Despite many losing seasons, Joe remained a devoted rambling wreck GA Tech football fan and 30+-year season ticket holder. Joe and Ann’s love for Colonial Williamsburg led to countless family Christmas vacations in Williamsburg, summers in Virginia with Ann’s family, and attendance at Williamsburg’s annual Antique Forums.

Joe is survived by his children Shawn [Scott], Sharon [Ryan] and Joe T [Emily]; their grandchildren Ann, Caitlyn, Len, Joseph, Pier, Ella, Eliza, and Greta.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the many caregivers and friends who showed Joe boundless love and compassion during these last several years.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Veterans Affairs' National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC at a later date.

Shawn, Joe T., and Sharon, I hope all of the time and energy your father dedicated to instilling the noble characteristics of the Stubb's family in you, Joe. T., Shawn, and your families bring you all closer and protects you. I enjoyed our phone conversations and visiting him in Savannah over the last six years.

Joe helped me kick off my career. After graduating from college, with a degree I didn't know what to do with, Joe connected me with the head pathologist at that time (Jane Jennings) at Memorial Medical Center. Jane guided me to a path that led to an accomplished career. Joe was also my opthalmologist while living in Savannah. Shawn, Sharon, and Joe T - you are and will always be family. I miss the old days. I hope your dad's passing brings you some peace but know how very hard is to lose one's parent. Sending love.
